Jay (Jonas) Smiley (1984–2025)

Jay Smiley was a Diné (Navajo) contemporary artist from the Navajo Nation in Arizona whose work blended abstraction, street art, and Indigenous symbolism into a distinctive visual language. Deeply rooted in the Diné philosophy of K’é (kinship) and traditional teachings, Smiley balanced these cultural foundations with influences from hip-hop, graffiti, music, dance, and contemporary urban art.

Working with aerosol spray paint, acrylic, stencils, ink, and mixed media, Smiley created layered compositions filled with Indigenous iconography, geometric forms, birds, landscapes, and abstract figures. His paintings explored identity, movement, resilience, and the relationship between ancestral knowledge and contemporary Native life.

A founding member of the Medicine Paint Dream Warriors collective, Smiley believed art was a form of community building. He was widely recognized for live painting at music festivals, cultural gatherings, and community events throughout the Southwest while also contributing to numerous public mural projects, including collaborations with Lower Antelope Canyon Tours, youth programs in Navajo, New Mexico, and the IMPACT Project.

Jay Smiley’s work continues to celebrate Diné culture while inspiring future generations of Indigenous artists through his fearless creativity and enduring artistic legacy.
